VIPoma (Verner-Morrison Syndrome)

Definition

VIPoma is a rare tumor arising from the delta cells of the pancreas that secretes excessive vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP). It is characterized by watery diarrhea, hypokalemia, and achlorhydria.

Symptoms

  • Severe, watery diarrhea
  • Dehydration
  • Hypokalemia (low potassium)
  • Cramps

Reasons

Sporadic or associated with MEN1 syndrome.

Diagnosis

High VIP level in blood, pancreatic imaging.

Treatment

Fluid-electrolyte replacement, somatostatin analogs, surgery.
