Definition

Trigeminal neuralgia is a neurological disease characterized by sudden, severe, stinging pain attacks in the distribution area of the trigeminal nerve in the face.

Symptoms

  • Pain in the face like a lightning strike
  • Factors that trigger pain (eating, talking)
  • Pain lasting seconds
  • It comes in attacks

Reasons

Compression of the trigeminal nerve by a vessel, multiple sclerosis.

Diagnosis

Clinical history, neurological examination, MRI.

Treatment

Antiepileptic drugs (carbamazepine), surgery.
