Subacute Thyroiditis (de Quervain)

Definition

Subacute thyroiditis is a painful inflammation of the thyroid that usually develops following a viral infection.

Symptoms

  • Fire
  • neck pain
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Palpitation

Reasons

Viral infections (e.g. mumps, influenza).

Diagnosis

Erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), thyroid function tests, thyroid ultrasound.

Treatment

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), corticosteroids.
