Peripheral Facial Paralysis

Definition

Peripheral facial paralysis is the paralysis of the facial muscles as a result of damage to the facial nerve at the peripheral level.

Symptoms

  • Loss of movement on one half of the face
  • Inability to close eyes
  • Inability to wrinkle forehead
  • Sagging at the corner of the mouth

Reasons

Bell's palsy, trauma, tumor.

Diagnosis

Clinical examination, EMG, imaging.

Treatment

Corticosteroids, physical therapy, surgery.
