Definition
Nelson syndrome is the aggressive growth of an ACTH-secreting pituitary tumor that develops in patients who have undergone bilateral adrenalectomy for Cushing's disease.
Symptoms
- Extreme darkening of the skin
- Headache
- Visual field loss
- Signs of pituitary insufficiency

Loss of feedback mechanism after bilateral adrenalectomy.
Diagnosis
High ACTH in the blood, tumor on pituitary MRI.
Treatment
Pituitary surgery, radiotherapy.
