Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia Type 1 (MEN1)

Definition

Multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 (MEN1) is an autosomal dominant syndrome characterized by tumors of the parathyroid, pancreas, and pituitary glands.

Symptoms

  • Hyperparathyroidism (most common)
  • Pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (gastrinoma, insulinoma)
  • Pituitary adenomas (prolactinomas)
  • Facial angiofibromas

Reasons

Mutation in the MEN1 tumor suppressor gene.

Diagnosis

Clinical criteria, genetic testing, hormone screenings and imaging.

Treatment

Surgery, medical treatment, and regular screening for tumors.
