Definition

MELAS syndrome is a mitochondrial disorder characterized by mitochondrial encephalopathy, lactic acidosis, and stroke-like attacks.

Symptoms

  • Stroke-like attacks
  • Seizures
  • Dementia
  • Hearing loss

Reasons

MT-TL1 and other mtDNA mutations.

Diagnosis

Brain MRI, lactate level, genetic testing.

Treatment

L-arginine, coenzyme Q10.
