Carcinoid Syndrome

Definition

Carcinoid syndrome is a set of symptoms caused by vasoactive substances (serotonin, etc.) released from neuroendocrine tumors (carcinoid tumors) that have usually metastasized to the liver.

Symptoms

  • Flushing (redness) on the face and neck
  • Diarrhea
  • Wheezing
  • Right heart failure

Reasons

Neuroendocrine tumors with liver metastases.

Diagnosis

5-HIAA, chromogranin A, imaging in 24-hour urine.

Treatment

Somatostatin analogues (ocreotide, lanreotide), surgery, chemotherapy.

What to Do in an Emergency?

In case of carcinoid crisis (severe flushing, hypotension, tachycardia), emergency services should be consulted immediately.
