Definition
Hyperprolactinemia is the condition of having higher than normal levels of the prolactin hormone in the blood.
Symptoms
- Menstrual irregularity in women
- Milk discharge from the breasts (galactorrhea)
- Decreased sexual desire in men
- Infertility
Reasons
Prolactinoma (pituitary adenoma), certain medications, hypothyroidism.
Diagnosis
Prolactin level in the blood, pituitary MRI.
Treatment
Dopamine agonists (bromocriptine, cabergoline), surgery.
