Definition

Hemolytic uremic syndrome is a syndrome characterized by microangiopathic hemolytic anemia, thrombocytopenia and acute renal failure.

Symptoms

  • Bloody diarrhea
  • Decreased urine output
  • Weakness
  • Paleness

E. coli O157:H7 infection, genetic factors.

Diagnosis

Complete blood count, kidney function tests.

Treatment

Supportive therapy, plasma exchange, dialysis.
