Pheochromocytoma

Definition

Pheochromocytoma is a tumor originating from the medulla of the adrenal gland, usually benign, and secreting excessive catecholamines (adrenaline, noradrenaline).

Symptoms

  • Hypertension that comes in attacks
  • Severe headache
  • Sweating
  • Palpitation

Reasons

Sporadic or hereditary (MEN2, VHL, NF1).

Diagnosis

Metanephrine/catecholamine levels in plasma or urine, adrenal imaging.

Treatment

Surgery (adrenalectomy), preceded by alpha blockade.

What to Do in an Emergency?

In case of hypertensive crisis (chest pain, shortness of breath, visual disturbances), the emergency room should be consulted immediately.
