Definition

Duchenne muscular dystrophy is an X-linked recessive inherited disease characterized by progressive muscle weakness resulting from a deficiency of the dystrophin protein.

Symptoms

  • Progressive muscle weakness
  • Difficulty walking
  • Pseudohypertrophy
  • Cardiomyopathy

Dystrophin gene mutation.

Diagnosis

Muscle enzymes, genetic testing, muscle biopsy.

Treatment

Corticosteroids, physical therapy, respiratory support.
