Definition
Diabetes insipidus is a disease characterized by excessive urination and thirst resulting from a deficiency or resistance to antidiuretic hormone (ADH).
Symptoms
- Excessive urination (polyuria)
- Excessive thirst (polydipsia)
- Dehydration
- Waking up at night to urinate
Reasons
Central (head trauma, tumor) or nephrogenic (kidney unresponsiveness to ADH).
Diagnosis
Water deprivation test, plasma and urine osmolarity.
Treatment
Desmopressin for central type, thiazide diuretics for nephrogenic type.
