Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo

Definition

BPPV is a peripheral vestibular disorder characterized by brief attacks of vertigo triggered by head movements.

Symptoms

  • Dizziness triggered by head movement
  • Nausea
  • Loss of balance
  • Involuntary movement of the eyes (nystagmus)

Reasons

Displacement of otoconial debris into the semicircular canals.

Diagnosis

Dix-Hallpike test, head impulse test.

Treatment

Repositioning maneuvers (Epley), vestibular rehabilitation.
