Becker Muscular Dystrophy

Definition

Becker muscular dystrophy is an X-linked recessive inherited disease characterized by an abnormality in the dystrophin protein, similar to Duchenne muscular dystrophy but with a milder course.

Symptoms

  • Slowly progressing muscle weakness
  • Mild difficulty walking
  • Pseudohypertrophy
  • Late start

Dystrophin gene mutation.

Diagnosis

Muscle enzymes, genetic testing, muscle biopsy.

Treatment

Physical therapy, respiratory support, cardiac monitoring.
