Basedow-Graves Disease

Definition

Basedow-Graves disease is an autoimmune cause of hyperthyroidism caused by thyroid-stimulating immunoglobulin (TSI).

Symptoms

  • Palpitation
  • Weight loss
  • Irritability
  • Exophthalmos (eyes protruding)

Reasons

Autoimmune, genetic predisposition.

Diagnosis

Thyroid hormone tests, TSH receptor antibody (TRAb), thyroid ultrasound.

Treatment

Antithyroid drugs (propylthiouracil, methimazole), radioactive iodine therapy, surgery.
