Definition
Acromegaly is a disease characterized by growth in the extremities of the body, such as the hands, feet and jaw, in adults, as a result of excessive secretion of growth hormone (GH) from an adenoma in the pituitary gland.
Symptoms
- Growths in the hands and feet
- The jaw juts forward
- Coarsening of facial features
- Increased sweating
Reasons
Pituitary adenoma (GH secreting).
Diagnosis
IGF-1 level, lack of GH suppression during oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT), pituitary MRI.
Treatment
Surgery (transsphenoidal), somatostatin analogues, radiotherapy.
